Paint Your Way Through Art History

Each week, students learn about an artist or art period and then create their own composition in imitation. We begin with cave paintings and go through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and all the way to modern abstractionists meeting Botticelli, Michelangelo, William Morris, Renoir, Pissarro, VanGogh, O'Keefe, Pollock, Warhol, and more! Each week I'll introduce an art technique such as mixing colors, brush drawing, figure drawing, portrait proportions, using the golden rectangle, composition, and more.... Students will create 29 compositions in a variety of mediums in a hard cover art journal, making a stunning portfolio of art history and displaying their skills.

This class meets once a week for an hour and a half. Students usually need more time after class to finish their project. The amount of time they spend varies by student and project.

Monday Noon EST to 1:30

Monday 3:00 to 4:30

Tuesday 2:00 to 3:30

Tuesday 8:30pm (7:30pm during daylight savings time)

The Companion book, Reflections on Art History will be used in this class. Enrolled students receive a coupon code for a discount. You will receive the discount code as soon as you've registered for a class.

Live online class meets for an hour and a half once a week for 15 weeks each semester.

Students upload a photo of their work to a private chat room for review and feedback.

Homework time varies, most students spend at least another hour working on their project outside of class, some spend more as they are interested.

Students provide their own art supplies and do some of their work on their own (we will start projects together online and they'll finish them on their own spending as much time as they'd like- a couple of hours or as much as they'd like).

Classes will have three parts:

1) Discuss students' artwork that they've uploaded to our private forum

2) History Slide Show: a brief devotion and a look at the artist and history

3) Instruction and Practice: I will demonstrate and explain drawing, painting, and composition techniques, then we will create a piece of art together which is inspired

the artist we've just learned about.

This class goes well with Classical Conversation's Challenge II's Western Cultural History strand. The 12 artists covered in CC's WCH are also used in this class as an art prompt.

Students will need a laptop with a camera and mic with which they will participate in class discussions and show their artwork. Students will also share their completed art in a private group where they can encourage each other.

Supply list will be sent automatically upon registration in a course info packet. Substitutions with supplies you already own are acceptable. (New brushes can prevent a lot of frustration.)

If a student misses a class they can watch a recording of the class whenever it's convenient.

Note: tuition is per student. If siblings take the class, they both pay tuition.

Registration Fee: $65

Early Bird Price for first semester: $250 if paid by Aug. 1.
