ONLINE Paint Your Way Through Art History

n this class, students will learn about an artist or art period and then create their own composition in imitation. We begin with cave paintings and go through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and all the way to modern abstractionists meeting Botticelli, Michelangelo, William Morris, Renoir, Pissarro, VanGogh, O'Keefe, Pollock, Warhol, and more! Each week I'll introduce an artist and an art technique. Students will create 24 compositions in a variety of mediums in a hard cover art journal, making a stunning portfolio of art history and displaying their skills.

Monday noon to 1:30

Tuesdays from 1:00 to 2:30

Tuesday evening 8:30pm to 10:00pm

Wednesday 1:00 to 2:30

Students will provide their own art supplies and do some of their work on their own (we will start projects together online and they'll finish them on their own spending as much time as they'd like- a couple of hours or as much as they'd like).

Classes will have two parts:

1) The Background: a brief devotion and a look at the artist and history

2) The Playground: we draw and paint together a composition inspired by

the artist we've just learned about. Students will need a laptop with a camera

with which they will participate in class discussions and show their artwork.

(Supply list will be provided upon registration. Substitutions with supplies you

already own are acceptable.)

No classes the week of October 6 - 9 -- Fall Break!

If a student misses a class for any reason, they can attend another session

or watch a recording of the class whenever it's convenient.

SUMMER INTENSIVE 2021: Paint Your Way Through Marvelous to Behold

Start date has not been set yet...check back in Feb...registration will open in Spring

Monday and Thursday 1:00 to 2:30 Eastern Time

Monday and Thursday 8:30 to 10:00 Eastern Time

By request from Western Cultural History Teachers we're going to discuss each painting in the book Marvelous to Behold and do our own creative artwork inspired by each painting! I'll show lots of other works by the selected artist or period, then demonstrate some painting techniques and give you some ideas for your own composition. You may want to paint along with me or create your composition between classes. At the following class, each participant will have a chance to show their artwork and talk about the experience, then we'll start the next painting. You'll enjoy the creative community and have 12 compositions to share with your Challenge II students this fall to spark conversations. (Students are welcome to join if they've already completed Challenge II.) Cost: $190 due by May 28. Classes will meet from 1:00pm to 2:30 Eastern Time on Thursdays and Mondays beginning May 28 and running through July 9 with a week off for the Fourth of July. To register, download the registration form under "FileShare" in the menu above. (No registration fee- just pay the tuition to hold your spot.) All levels of art experience welcome! I'll give lots of ideas for all levels from copying the whole piece to just doing a small portion or doing an art journal-type composition of your thoughts and reactions to the art. (Supply list on page 2 of registration form.) Email if you have questions: To purchase Marvelous to Behold visit:

Art + Design Class (Levels I and II meet together) - This class is modeled after my freshman studio in the College of Design at North Carolina State University. We spend the first semester playing with the elements of design: line, shape, texture, movement, color, composition, etc. Students try different drawing and painting techniques and materials from charcoal and pastels to pen and ink, acrylic paints, paper mâché, acrylics, cut paper, and collage. Students will be given art challenges in which they experiment with the materials and elements and the emphasis will be on process rather than product. In the second semester, students will apply the skills and knowledge to applied design projects such as poster design, food truck design, logo design, sticker design, architectural design, and set design. Class will meet at Spiritual Twist Productions in Garner on Friday from 2:00 to 3:30. (More days and times may be added if class size is restricted, so email me if you would like to register for the class but would prefer a different day or time).

Start date: August 28. Ages 13+ (Some projects from this class are explained in my blog! At the top of this page, click, "Blog" and scroll through to see some of our projects. Projects change every year, so students can take the class more than once- the second time through, students will work at a higher level and have more freedom to experiment and parents can indicate it on transcripts as "Art+Design I and II".) This class is not available for 2020-2021.

Drawing and Painting Short Seminars - 8 week sessions are offered throughout the year. Students spend 4 weeks practicing different drawing techniques and materials. Then, they spend 4 weeks practicing painting techniques. Students can take these classes multiple times as subject matter and projects are always different. Days and times will be announced in the fall to coordinate with Spiritual Twist Productions class schedule. (Visit the blog to see more projects and descriptions!)

Summer Intensives - Spend one week focusing on a particular skill or medium like sculpture, expressionism painting, impressionism painting, graphic design, set painting, art journaling or impasto painting. Details will be posted when we get the okay to meet in person, hopefully mid-May through July. Email me if you'd like to be put on the mailing list for these classes- if you're already on the STP mailing list, you will receive an email update as soon as it's availalbe. If you'd like to see a class in something that isn't listed here, email me, and I'll see if I can include it!

Paint Parties - If you'd like to plan a one-time paint party, I'd be happy to discuss that with you! Email me at Get a few friends and plan a Mother-Daughter Paint Night, Birthdays, Bible Study groups, Girls Night Out, Date Night.... I can host outside in my backyard when the weather is nice...or I'll come to your backyard!

About Me

I am a writer and graphic designer who decided to homeschool my three amazing kids. I read everything ever written on classical Christian homeschooling (well, everything I could get my hands on). Some would say that makes me an expert. I don't know if I'm an expert, but after 12 years, I've seen a lot! I love art, literature, travel, and teaching. I love being creative and cultivating creativity in others.
