Each week, students learn about an artist or art period and then create their own composition in imitation. We begin with cave paintings and go through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and all the way to modern abstractionists meeting Botticelli, Michelangelo, William Morris, Renoir, Pissarro, VanGogh, O'Keefe, Pollock, Warhol, and more! Each week I'll introduce an art technique such as mixing colors, brush drawing, figure drawing, portrait proportions, using the golden rectangle, composition, and more.... Students will create 29 compositions in a variety of mediums in a hard cover art journal, making a stunning portfolio of art history and displaying their skills.

My new book, Reflections on Art History will be used in this class. Enrolled students receive a coupon code for a discount. You will receive the discount code as soon as you've registered for a class.

Live online class meets for an hour and a half once a week.

Students upload a photo of their work to a private chat room for review and feedback.

August 23 First week of classes

September 27- October 1 Fall break (beach art retreat Sept. 30 - Oct 3)

November 22 - 26 Thanksgiving break

December 20 - January 7 Christmas break

Students provide their own art supplies and do some of their work on their own (we will start projects together online and they'll finish them on their own spending as much time as they'd like- a couple of hours or as much as they'd like).

Classes will have three parts:

1) Discuss students' artwork that they've uploaded to our private forum

2) History Slide Show: a brief devotion and a look at the artist and history

3) Instruction and Practice: I will demonstrate and explain drawing, painting, and composition techniques, then we will create a piece of art together which is inspired

the artist we've just learned about.

Students will need a laptop with a camera with which they will participate in class discussions and show their artwork. (Phones and tablets can be quirky, and don't work as well.)

(Supply list will be provided upon registration. Substitutions with supplies you already own are acceptable.)

If a student misses a class they can watch a recording of the class whenever it's convenient.

Into The Woods.png

This class will focus on drawing techniques and skills. Every class will be like the next chapter in a story in which we go a little further into the woods and discover something new each week. A short, fun poem and great artwork from art history will give us ideas for drawing the things we discover: maybe we will come upon "a host of golden daffodils", "dappled things", or, "a tree with a nest of robins in her hair." In addition to drawing, we'll learn to use color with, colored pencils, water colors, or markers. (A supply list will be sent in a pdf upon registration.) Class will meet live, online once a week for one hour. This class uses the book, "Draw Your Way into the Woods." You will receive a coupon code for the book as soon as you pay the registration fee.

Students will create their own nature journal, adding at least one drawing each week. You might want to extend the lesson by having your students draw the subject again, draw from nature outside, memorize the poem, or copy the poem for handwriting practice. (You might even want to choose spelling words from the poem for your spelling lesson!) I am working on a new book for this class which will have the poem, samples of great art from the masters, and step by step instructions so your students will have their source material at their fingertips.

These classes will be led by Grace Martin who recently graduated from Regent University with a degree in communications and fine art. She is a fun, energetic artist who is excited to share her love of the Lord, love of art history, and her love of creating art with students. I met Grace when she was a teaching assistant at the Christian youth theater where I volunteer painting sets. She is a compassionate and fun leader. Your students will love her!

Improve drawing and painting skills, learn new techniques with more opportunities to experiment with original ideas

Prerequisite: Paint Your Way Through Art History or Paint Your Way Through Marvelous to Behold

We will build on our drawing and painting skills by taking a look at masters from the past during the first semester, spending a little more time on the greatest works of art and trying some new things that we didn't have time for in Paint Your Way Through Art History, but the focus will change to coming up with original ideas. I'll give suggestions, but encourage students to try new things and come up with their own subjects. Try new techniques like pallet knife painting, water colors, and collage. We discovered that creativity is contagious, so we will share ideas and inspire each other to try new things!

Our first challenge will be rolling the dice to see which two artists we will combine to create something new: would it be the content of Michelangelo in the style of Matisse? The content of Homer in the style of Picasso? No telling what challenges we'll face in this art game!

In the second semester, we will have more open ended assignments where students can explore their own ideas...some assignments may take more than one week, allowing students to try more ambitious projects, and follow their heart. They will benefit from mentorship and peer support and accountability, so even if your student is already doing art on their own, this community will be a real blessing.

Honors students will plan and lead a class: they will prepare a 10 minute talk on an artist and lead me and the students in a creative project inspired by that artist. (I'll work with students outside of class to prepare.) Honors students will also be required to comment on the online forum (Posting comments is optional for regular credit students).

This is a year-long Fine Arts Credit. (Honors credit if the student leads a class and participates in online discussion.)

If the class is cancelled because it doesn't get the minimum of 12 students, you can move to another session or we will refund the deposit. (Tell your friends about the class to make sure your session fills. :D)

After you register, you will receive a PDF document. Inside that PDF is a link to choose your day and time.

If you register after the class has ended, email me and I'll send you the class packet of reference material.

If you took the class last year, you're welcome to do it again...there are lots of options each week, you can try a different twist on the art projects this year or repeat them to improve your skills!

By request from Western Cultural History Teachers we're going to discuss each painting in the book Marvelous to Behold and do our own creative artwork inspired by each painting! I'll show lots of other works by the selected artist or period, then demonstrate some painting techniques and give you some ideas for your own composition. You'll paint and draw along with me "in" my studio, live. At the following class, we'll look at the student art that gets uploaded between classes. You'll enjoy the creative community and have 12 compositions to share with your Challenge II students this fall to spark conversations. (Students are welcome to join, too.) Cost: $190 due by May 28.

All levels of art experience welcome! I'll give lots of ideas for all levels from copying the whole piece to just doing a small portion or doing an art journal-type composition of your thoughts and reactions to the art. (Supply list on the PDF you receive when you pay.) Email if you have questions: CourtneyLSanfordDesign@gmail.com To purchase Marvelous to Behold visit: https://classicalconversationsbooks.com
