What students and parents are saying about classes with Mrs. Sanford:

"Thank you for all the talent you share, effort you put forth, and time you give.😊 It is truly marvelous to behold!"

"Thank you for showing us all this stuff. I have so many more new ideas after class!"

(By "stuff", this student means the artwork of the masters :) )

"I would like to say WE LOVE YOUR CLASS!!! My hubby and I get to hear the class on occasions we're in the other room doing telehealth services. My husband even commented how he enjoys listening in. My daughter is learning a lot, expanding her genres and ENJOYING herself doing it!"

"My daughter is loving this class! I am so thankful for you and for sharing your talents with her."

Students learn about an artist or art period and then create their own composition in imitation. We begin with cave paintings and go through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and all the way to modern abstractionists meeting Botticelli, Michelangelo, William Morris, Renoir, Pissarro, VanGogh, O'Keefe, Pollock, Warhol, and more! Each week I'll introduce an art technique such as mixing colors, brush drawing, figure drawing, portraits, using the golden rectangle, composition, and more.... Students will create 24 compositions in a variety of mediums in a hard cover art journal, making a stunning portfolio of art history and displaying their skills.

Monday noon to 1:30

Tuesdays from 1:00 to 2:30

Tuesday evening 8:30pm to 10:00pm

Wednesday 1:00 to 2:30

Students provide their own art supplies and do some of their work on their own (we will start projects together online and they'll finish them on their own spending as much time as they'd like- a couple of hours or as much as they'd like).

Classes will have two parts:

1) The Background: a brief devotion and a look at the artist and history

2) The Playground: we draw and paint together a composition inspired by

the artist we've just learned about. Students will need a laptop with a camera

with which they will participate in class discussions and show their artwork.

(Supply list will be provided upon registration. Substitutions with supplies you

already own are acceptable.)

If a student misses a class for any reason, they can watch a recording of the class whenever it's convenient. Samples of student work:

By request from Western Cultural History Teachers we're going to discuss each painting in the book Marvelous to Behold and do our own creative artwork inspired by each painting! I'll show lots of other works by the selected artist or period, then demonstrate some painting techniques and give you some ideas for your own composition. You may want to paint along with me or create your composition between classes. At the following class, each participant will have a chance to show their artwork and talk about the experience, then we'll start the next painting. You'll enjoy the creative community and have 12 compositions to share with your Challenge II students this fall to spark conversations. (Students are welcome to join if they've already completed Challenge II.) Cost: $190 due by May 28. Classes will meet from 1:00pm to 2:30 Eastern Time on Thursdays and Mondays beginning May 28 and running through July 9 with a week off for the Fourth of July. To register, download the registration form under "FileShare" in the menu above. (No registration fee- just pay the tuition to hold your spot.) All levels of art experience welcome! I'll give lots of ideas for all levels from copying the whole piece to just doing a small portion or doing an art journal-type composition of your thoughts and reactions to the art. NEW CLASS for Students who have completed either of the above classes

Thursday 1:00 to 2:30 Eastern Time (Regular and Honors)

Thursday 8:30 to 10:00 Eastern Time (Regular and Honors)

Registration fee of $50 will hold your spot. (non-refundable)

Balance due by first class: $160

Or Pay for the first semester now: $200 (save $10)

Second semester tuition will be due in January ($200)

Pay for full year now: $380 (save $20)

We will build on our drawing and painting skills by taking a look at masters from the past during the first semester...spending a little more time on the greatest works of art and trying some new things that we didn't have time for in Paint Your Way Through Art History, but the focus will change to coming up with original ideas. I'll give suggestions, but encourage students to try new things and come up with their own subjects.

In the second semester, we will have more open ended assignments where students can explore their own ideas...some assignments may take more than one week, allowing students to try more ambitious projects, and follow their heart.

Honors students will plan and lead a class: they will prepare a 10 minute talk on an artist and lead the students in a creative project inspired by that artist. (I'll work with students outside of class to prepare.)

This is a year-long Fine Arts Credit. (Honors if the student leads a class.)

About Me

I am a writer and graphic designer who decided to homeschool my three amazing kids. I read everything ever written on classical Christian homeschooling (well, everything I could get my hands on). Some would say that makes me an expert. I don't know if I'm an expert, but after 12 years, I've seen a lot! I love art, literature, travel, and teaching. I love being creative and cultivating creativity in others.
